| 内容記述 | The purpose of this study is to examine how photographic images of natural disasters in Japanese newspapers have been represented. Japan has experienced great number of disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, landslides, floods, and volcano eruptions. The images of damage by those disasters have been represented in news media. Those images may have affected the construction of reality of the audience as well as their view of nature, risk perception, and self-efficacy to deal with disasters. Furthermore, images can generate a stronger emotional appeal and may have more intense impacts on audience than texted contents. In this study, with a preliminary qualitative content analysis, the author tried to analyze the visual frames shown in images of natural disasters in newspapers in Japan. The photographs in articles about five recent major disasters including the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 were taken from newspaper databases and analyzed. With the result, the author discusses how images of natural disaster in Japanese newspapers have been represented and how they might influence the view of natural disaster of Japanese people. |
