This paper describes the way how he developed his idea of an art education, focusing on the Showa period. First, Kanae had an experience of studying abroad, which led him to improve the method of Japanese art education. Second, Kanae developed his original idea of the art education, writing some books for children during the Showa period. He thought that creative activities would play important roles in the art education for children. In the arena of the art education, he included some activities of making crafts, studying about natural designs and creating puppet theatres. Third, Kanae made many artistic materials for children in the Showa period. However, during the Showa period he had a financial collapse and lost his family and friends one after another.
